BEMFAM is a Brazilian not for profit NGO, which has been working in the area of social development, promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights including family planning for 47 years. It is certified by the Ministry of Social Development as a charitable social assistance entity. The national headquarter is based in Rio de Janeiro and the organization operates through eight regional offices, as well as seven Youth Social Promotion Centers.

By granting easier access to S&RH services, BEMFAM contributes to the social development of the most vulnerable groups of the population. It operates through several regions in Brazil , defending and promoting the social, environmental, sexual and reproductive rights of the individual and the society. BEMFAM also conducts social, demographic and medical research on mother and child health, as well as operational, diagnostical and quality evaluations related to care.

In accordance with the International Conference on Human Rights (1993), the Cairo Conference (1994), the Beijing Conference (1995) and with the United Nations Millennium Summit resolution (2000), which established the Millennium Development Goals, signed by all 191 member countries, BEMFAM has been developing projects on sexual and reproductive health assertion, in order to fight explicit gender inequalities and to improve family life, particularly for children, teenagers and adults.

BEMFAM’s main goals for this decade are (i) working online and in partnerships with select social networks to develop people centered individual and family care interventions, with a focus on the young and the elderly (using established public policies?) (ii) defining development and social policies, focused entirely on the family, on gender equality and on the woman´s right to sexual and reproductive health; (iii) advancing the basic human right of women, men and youth to freely and consciously determine their own sexual and reproductive health; (iv) to reinforce the contribution of the family planning effort with the additional development efforts of other partners e.g. governments, international agencies and other organizations in order to meet the needs of populations in vulnerable conditions.
